Resilience has long been a topical issue in the industry, and Sara Price, Sustainability Manager at Sappi Europe, developed the theme at a seminar Future Square at PulpPaper 2022. Price defines resilience as the ability to cope and adapt to change. Not least to climate change and natural disasters.
- Interestingly, resilience was something that was seen as a future scenario 10 years ago. But we actually have to deal with resilience now, said Sara Price, who referred to statistics that predict that the number of natural disasters will augment exponentially in 2030.
Specifically, Sappi, as one of the world's largest pulp and paper groups, manages climate change through various efficiency projects in the Group's facilities througout Europe, namely by exiting coal as a fuel and replacing it whith biomass. About ten energy efficiency projects are underway in Europe, according to Sara Price.
Sara Price also spoke about physical risks facing the Group's plants.
-Interesting, one of our major challenges is water supply, both its quality and availability.
