New market analysis Europe’s paper and board sector players were impacted by a lower level of demand, destocking and high production costs last year, according to a recently released report by the Brussels-based industry body CEPI.
“Suffering from an adverse macro-economic context, production of pulp and paper in Europe … experienced a decline in 2023. It was due to several compounding external factors: a poor economic environment, destocking and still high energy costs,“ the industry association said in a statement.
With mid-term worldwide economic trends influencing the demand for paper and board and exacerbating destocking, consumption decreawd by 15.3% last year. Due to this, production in the paper and board industry experienced a second consecutive year of contraction, falling by 12.8%, as indicated by data released by CEPI.
