Metsä Wood, part of Metsä Group, plans to discontinue plywood production in Suolahti, Finland. The plan to end production at the Suolahti mill is based on its poor profitability. According to the plans, production at the Suolahti birch plywood mill would end by the end of first quarter of 2025 and production at the spruce plywood mill would end by the end of 2026 at the latest. The statutory negotiations at the Suolahti mill concern all the plywood mill’s employees, in total about 370 people.
“The closing of the mill is planned to be carried out in stages to better enable the employment of personnel within Metsä Group. The personnel of the new Kerto LVL mill in Äänekoski would be recruited from the Suolahti mill, and permanent personnel would be offered the opportunity to work in other Metsä Group units”, says Jaakko Anttila, Executive Vice President at Metsä Wood.
The Suolahti plywood mill has an annual production capacity of 35 000 m3 of birch plywood and 160 000 m3 of spruce plywood.
