Lucart, a multinational paper company, is stepping up its sustainability game by joining the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), a move that underscores its dedication to a sustainable future. This partnership involves setting science-backed greenhouse gas emission reduction goals by 2026, in line with the latest research and third-party validation.
The company has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint, achieving an 11% reduction in specific CO2 emissions in 2022 compared to 2021, and a 22% decrease since 2014 (Scopes 1 and 2).
By committing to SBTi, Lucart aims to develop precise reduction targets for direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from energy production (Scope 2), and emissions from its value chain (Scope 3). The focus is on Near-Term Reduction Targets, laying the groundwork for ambitious climate strategies.
The need for actions
Massimo Pasquini, Lucart Group CEO, sees this as an advancement in their ethical and business journey, emphasizing the need for actions driven by scientific necessity rather than convenience. The SBTi, established in 2015 by CDP, UNGC, WRI, and WWF, encourages companies to align their emission targets with the COP21 Paris Agreement goals, aiming to limit global warming to below 2°C, preferably to 1.5°C.
Lucart's commitment to sustainability is not new; since joining the United Nations Global Compact Network Italy in 2020, it has embraced a systemic approach to sustainable paper production. In 2022, the company not only reduced CO2 emissions but also cut specific NOX emissions by 19.6% and decreased water usage per tonne of paper by 5.9% compared to 2021. Lucart's efforts reflect a broader commitment to creating value for all stakeholders and combating climate change.
