US printing-writing paper shipments decreased 7 per cent  in January 2025

According to the American Forest & Paper Association, U.S. total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 7% in January 2025 compared to January 2024. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers increased 10% in December 2024 compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased 1% when compared to December 2024.

Individually, changes in U.S. shipments across all three major P-W categories (UFS, CFS, and MECH) in January showed mixed results compared to the same period last year. Uncoated Free Sheet (UFS) shipments decreased by 9%, Coated Free Sheet (CFS) shipments decreased by 5%, and Mechanical (MECH) paper shipments saw a modest 2% increase, albeit on a relatively small volume.
