EcoVadis Platinum for Holmen’s paperboard mill in Workington

The Workington mill has been awarded the EcoVadis Platinum medal, showing that they perform at the highest level in the fields of environment, ethics, sustainable procurement and labour and human rights.

Producing a folding boxboard (FBB) is a demanding process, and Incada, the paperboard made at the Workington mill in the UK, is of very high quality.

The mill also excels in sustainability management. Like Holmen's other paper and paperboard mills, the Workington mill has now been awarded the EcoVadis Platinum medal, showing that they perform at the highest level in the fields of environment, ethics, sustainable procurement and labour and human rights.

The folding boxboard produced at Workington is constructed in several plies and is a combination of chemically and mechanically produced pulp.

The chemical pulp is purchased from other manufacturers, whilst Workington produces the mechanical pulp. This involves grinding up the timber, which results in a pulp that adds stiffness and thickness to the paperboard.

Continuous development and adaptation to customer needs and expectations are essential for success in a highly competitive market. Workington Mill is an integrated pulp and paperboard mill. Since 2013, it has been fully powered by fossil-free, carbon-free bioenergy. Bleached mechanical pulp is processed to suit the specific requirements of paperboard production and combined with purchased bleached chemical pulp to create a multi-layered board construction that best meets the needs of modern paperboard packaging.
