Sonoco to close packaging plant, lay off 67 workers

Sonoco announces that it will close its RTS Packaging facility in Scarborough, Maine, by the end of June 2025.

The move will impact 67 jobs.

A Sonoco spokesperson said the decision to close the facility was "driven by continued cost inflation compounded by lower sales volume in the folding carton market."

The plant opened in 1987 and became part of Sonoco's portfolio in 1997.

Founded in 1899, Sonoco Products Company is a global packaging leader based in Hartsville, South Carolina. It produces paper, plastic, and flexible packaging for industries like food, healthcare, and industrial goods.
